New Class of Mosquitocide

Case ID:
UA13-107
Invention:

This invention is a small molecule mosquitocide and method of mosquito control is based on selectively inhibiting the blood feeding of female mosquitoes. The compound inhibits nutrient processing and is lethal as shown in adult mosquito assays.

Background:

Numerous diseases are spread by mosquitoes, which develop resistance to chemical pesticides over time. New modes of actions for vector control are needed to combat numerous serious diseases.

Advantages:

  • Targets blood feeding female mosquitoes using biochemistry
  • Does not work by neurotoxicity
  • The mode of action is not applicable to many other insects, including bees

Applications:

  • Mosquito control
  • Agriculture as a secondary vector for mosquito-borne illness
  • Potential use in other arthropods which feed on human blood
