Adjustable Hybrid Diffractive/Refractive Achromatic Lens

Invention:

Researchers at the University of Arizona have designed an achromatic variable focus lens that can correct for Seidel Aberrations in addition to chromatic dispersion. The technology uses fluid pressure control to alter the curvature of clear membranes containing fluid in correlation with the wavelength and the desired focal length. Software enables the user to select two different fluids based on the desired Abbe number and index of refraction. The user then selects the desired focal length and the lens automatically changes the two radii of curvature to adjust the focal length. In this sense we have created a digital lens that gives the user full control of the achromatic lenses focal length while controlling aberrations. Coupling multiple digital lenses allows for the production of various designed systems such as variable magnification telescopes and microscopes, relay systems, or other designs, without moving parts.
