Tree Caterpillar Traps

Case ID:
UA17-259
Invention:

This invention relates to caterpillars as a sustainable food source.

Background:

Land, water, and energy use required for food production strain available resources, and will continue to do so as the global population and standards of living increase. Protein sources, such as meat, often require significantly more intensive resource use. Traditionally many cultures consume insects as a regular part of their diet. These provide protein, poly- and monounsaturated fats, and essential nutrients, with reduced resource use. This invention facilitates caterpillar harvesting by taking advantage of their natural behavior.

Applications:

  • Sustainably-minded grocers
  • Humanitarian aid
  • Isolated communities
  • Survival kits
  • Pet supply

Advantages:

  • Sustainable food source with less environmental and social impact
  • Simple design that can readily be modified to local requirements
  • Easily set up and maintained
  • Minimal work to harvest products
