TomCats (Tomato Caterpillars)

Case ID:
UA17-261
Invention:

This invention is the production of protein-rich caterpillars.

Background:

Population growth and increasing standards of living require significantly greater food production. Animal protein sources demand high-intensity uses of land, water, and energy. In many cultures insects are traditionally served as an alternative protein source. These sustainably provide the required protein and nutrients with far less impact. This complementary process uses minimal resources while providing a valuable alternative protein source.

Applications:

  • Sustainably-minded grocers
  • Humanitarian aid
  • Isolated communities
  • Survival kits
  • Pet supply

Advantages:

  • Efficient use of resources otherwise wasted
  • Continuous and complementary process
  • Sustainable and environmentally-friendly food source
