Programmable Waveguide Device

Case ID:
UA21-212
Invention:

This technology describes a programmable optical waveguide device that can be configured to operate as an optical switch, optical attenuator, interferometer, mode transformer and optical computer.

Background:
An optical waveguide is a physical structure that guides electromagnetic waves in the optical spectrum. Common types of optical waveguides include optical fiber and planar dielectric waveguides made of low loss dielectric materials such as plastic and glass. Optical waveguides are used as components in integrated optical circuits or as the transmission medium in local and long haul optical communication systems.

In this technology, the inventor proposes a programmable waveguide device that can be configured to operate as an optical switch, optical attenuator, interferometer, mode transformer and optical computer using electro-optics and/or birefringent materials such as liquid crystals.

Applications:

  • Optical switch
  • Optical attenuator
  • Interferometer
  • Mode transformer
  • Optical computer

Advantages:

  • Highly accurate and efficient
  • Utilizes liquid crystals
  • Reconfigurable
  • Broad applications
