Point of Care Microfluidic Aggrogometer

Case ID:
UA17-170
Invention:

This invention is a device to assess platelet aggregation for diagnosis of thrombotic diseases and continual monitoring with anti-platelet therapy.

Background:
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and, with over 50% of those deaths due to clot formation from myocardial ischemia and infarction. Anti-platelet therapies commonly used are aspirin, clopidogrel, and prasugrel. Monitoring anti-platelet therapy is currently not done on a routine basis due to a lack of a standardized definition of ineffectual anti-platelet therapy. With that said, there is a need for a widely-accepted point-of-care platelet function test that is reliable, accurate, and easy to use in clinics.

Applications:

  • Platelet function testing
  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Diagnostics

Advantages:

  • Measures onset and progression
  • Measures degree of severity
  • Assesses response to anti-platelet therapy

Status: issued U.S. patent #11,458,470
