Phononic Crystal Material that Creates Acoustic and Elastic Flatbands for Acoustic and Vibration Dampening Applicaitons

Case ID:
UA16-039
Invention:

This invention is generally directed towards phononic crystals (PCs) more specifically to phononic metamaterials suitable for attenuating mechanical vibrations, as well as acoustic vibrations that propagate through a medium.

Background:

Phononic metamaterials enable the manipulation of both elastic and acoustic waves in different media, from attenuation (including absorption and reflection) to coupling, tunneling, negative refraction, and focusing.  In particular, the attenuation of vibration such as vector mechanical vibrations through a solid, or a scalar acoustic vibration in a medium, such as in air or water, is important technology for applications where the presence of vibrations affects the intended performance of the device or entity in question, such as but not limited to a vehicle.

Applications:

  • Automotive Industry
  • Aerospace Industry
  • Machinery
  • Robotics
  • Mechanical Applications--Assembly
  • Mining Industry
  • Medical Device Industry—specifically related to acoustics
  • Most engineering applications where reduction of vibration and acoustics is important

Advantages: The invention provides significant improvement of attenuation of vibration.
