Optimal Receiver Design based on Linear Optics for Entanglement-Assisted Sensing and Communication

Case ID:
UA22-196
Invention:

This technology is a structured receiver for entanglement-assisted communication and sensing that relies only on off-the-shelf components. This innovation may enable high-rate communication in the presence of noise and high precision quantum radar detection.

Upon receiving the return of the signal, the receiver first performs a heterodyne or homodyne detection on the return. Next, phase shift and beam splitting are performed on the idlers. Finally, homodyne or photon counting is performed on the idlers.

Background:
Entanglement-assisted protocols entangle an initial signal with an ancilla for entanglement-assistance, which is jointly measured with the received signal to boost the information extraction performance. Focus is given to microwave or optical sensing and communication. The long-standing problem in designing receivers and protocols that can operate with noise is solved by converting the quantum problem into a semi-classical one.

By combining a conversion module with a standard optimal coherent-state receiver, optimal receiver design is achieved for various applications. For example, a design for quantum illumination target detection only relies on off-the-shelf components of heterodyne detection, quadrature displacement, and photon detection.
