Improvements to Minimally Invasive Percutaneous Guide for Hip Fracture Fixation

Case ID:
UA20-187
Invention:

This invention is a design for a minimally invasive dynamic hip screw guide that will fix the position and angle in the frontal plane for the intramedullary rod. This device is a guide that can be placed on the leg rather than directly on the bone, allowing for a procedure that is significantly less invasive. This current adaptation of the invention includes aspects considered to be improvements to the already patented design.

Background:
Intertrochanteric hip fractures are most commonly treated with a sliding hip screw implant. These fractures are most common to the elderly, where surgery time and blood loss are of the utmost importance when performing surgery. These fractures have high mortalities (15-20%) because of the high chance of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and pulmonary embolism. Intertrochanteric fractures are one of the three types of hip fractures and occur between the lesser trochanter and the neck of the femur. Stable fractures are currently treated with engineered fixation devices, usually plate/screw implants with an intramedullary rod.

Applications:

  • Intertrochanteric hip fractures
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Orthopedic trauma implants
  • Minimally invasive arthroplasty
  • Osteotomies about the knee
  • Placement of cannulated screw for fixation of femoral neck fracture

Advantages:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Reduced surgery time
  • Patented technology

Status: U.S. issued patent #11,617,609
