Glycocalyx Mimetics

Case ID:
UA26-138
Invention:

This invention involves a type of medical tube/tubing or catheter with a glycocalyx mimetic coating to prevent blood clotting.

Background:
The endothelial glycocalyx is a dynamic surface layer of vascular endothelial cells, of vascular endothelial cells, acting as a critical, multi-functional barrier for vascular health. It maintains vascular homeostasis by regulating permeability, mechanosensing, and preventing blood cell adhesion (preventing thrombosis and inflammation). Currently, there is a lack of available and reliable glycocalyx-mimetic coatings on vascular devices, such as with catheters or medical device tubing. This invention adds glycocalyx mimetics as a coating layer on medical tubing to replicate glycocalyx functionality for better compatibility and usage of medical devices.

Applications:

  • Glycocalyx mimetics
  • Catheter device
  • Medical tubing devices
  • Vascular tubing devices
  • Surgical and critical care

Advantages:

  • Blood clotting prevention and hemocompatibility
  • Better implementation of medical devices
  • Reduced cardiovascular disease
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Medical tube coating market expansion
  • Reduced complications from surgical and critical care procedure including pulmonary embolism and stroke
