Gall Bladder Cryoablation Device

Invention:

This device is a novel cryoablation procedure and probe to treat gallstones. The probe is designed to fit in the gall bladder. The probe will freeze and ablate the gallbladder and cystic ducts but won’t freeze other organs that are in close proximity with the gall bladder. This invention is a less invasive alternative to a cholecystectomy for healthy patients and for patients who are too ill for surgery.

 

Background:

Patients who are treated for gallstones often have to undergo a cholecystectomy to remove the gallbladder. Approximately 700,000 cholecystectomies performed annually. Cholecystectomies are performed as either as an open surgery or as a laparoscopic procedure. Surgery is costly and has risks. About 8% of patients have complications. A cholecystectomy can cost between $21,000 and $33,000. Some patients who require cholecystectomies are unable to have the surgery because they are too ill for the procedure. A less invasive and more cost-effective procedure is needed to address these issues. This invention offers a solution that addresses the cost and risk of treating gallstones by using a less invasive method of chemical ablation of the gallstones.
