Fecal Containment Obstetric Drape

Case ID:
UA23-112
Invention:

This technology is an obstetric under-buttocks drape that has an additional flap located above the fluid collection portion for use during labor and delivery in childbirth. This is a one-size-fits all flap that has an adhesive lining at the top that allows for adhesion to the patient’s perineum and across the patient’s back thighs. The flap will not interfere with the delivery of the infant as it is located inferior to the vaginal introitus. This will create a sealed barrier between the sterile field and any defecation so that the infant will not encounter fecal matter. Providers can then focus on supporting the patient through the pushing process instead of wiping up fecal matter and disposing of it to reestablish a sterile area. If necessary, the flap can be easily removed to expose the anus.

Background:
Bowel movements are common during the second stage of labor due to the muscles utilized during pushing the infant down the birth canal. The embarrassment from the bowel movements often distracts or causes added stress for the patient during childbirth. The nurses and providers also are continuously using and disposing of resources to clean the patient in order to alleviate stress and maintain a sterile environment to bring the infant into. Currently it is standard for a sterile under-buttocks drape to be present during childbirth, however it only addresses the collection of blood and other fluids expelled during vaginal delivery.

Applications:

  • Childbirth
  • Medical procedures where defecation could occur

Advantages:

  • Easier for providers to establish sterile area
  • Simple to use
  • Does not interfere with delivery of the infant
  • Separate barrier between sterile and soiled fields
  • Reduces potential embarrassment and stress for the patient
