Dermoscopy Performance and Educational Phone Application

Case ID:
UA23-266
Invention:

This invention is a dermoscopy phone app for dermatologists and clinicians that tracks diagnostic accuracy of skin biopsies obtained on dermoscope. The app will allow users to review their personal image library and utilize built-in app statistics to identify areas for improvement. Dermatopathologists reviewing the histology slides will have the opportunity to review the dermoscopy photos, which would provide valuable clinicopathologic correlation that could facilitate the interpretation of the pathology report. The app will have built-in statistics to identify core competencies for improvement as it will track findings obtained from dermatopathologists’ review of the histology slides relative to dermoscope image. The software will also allow physicians/clinicians to review their personal image library.

Background:
Despite the wide use of phone apps today, the educational resources for dermatologists in this space is lacking. This software would allow objective analysis of user's dermoscopic capabilities. Feedback on decision making is one of the most powerful strategies to improve accuracy of diagnosis and clinical outcome. The image database built from this app could also provide invaluable data for future academic pursuits.
