Copper Leaching from its Ores and Concentrates Using Methane Sulfonic Acid (MSA)

Case ID:
UA18-024
Invention:

The use of methanesulfonic acid (MSA) as an anti-scaling agent in the mining industry has previously been recognized, however the opportunity for MSA to leach precious metals has not been utilized. This invention incorporates the use of MSA during extractive metallurgy, to leach copper and gold simultaneously. The invention’s ability to leach both copper and gold provides unique opportunity in a relatively standard mining industry.

Background:

In a market dominated by high competition and barriers to entry, the invention’s ability to provide a cost-efficient leaching solution with industrial scale capabilities is provided. The invention provides a unique and novel method to change the previously standard process of extractive metallurgy, with an easy to use MSA-based solution.

Applications:

  • Extractive metallurgy (mineral processing)

Advantages:

  • Ease of use
  • Low cost
  • High marketability

Status: issued U.S. patent #12,077,834
