Computer Assisted Surgical Trainer - Portable Version (CAST-PV)

Case ID:
UA11-139
Invention:

This technology is a construction kit that allows users to build a minimally invasive surgical (MIS) box trainer that provides a range of skills training. The trainer is portable, affordable and provides performance assessment software that can be downloaded to smart tablets and phones. Made with Lego Mindstorms, CAST-PV allows users to design training instruments and tasks for their own specified training purposes. Users can use this technology to train for specific procedures and be assessed for their performance.

Background:
Medical simulation is an interactive training and feedback method in which trainees practice tasks and processes in lifelike situations. This fragmented industry is segmented by technological equipment; surgical robots, surgical navigation systems, intelligent operating rooms, and surgical simulators and planners.

Applications:

  • Computer assisted surgical/laparoscopic training
  • Training medical students/surgical interns
  • Training surgeons on new minimally invasive procedures
  • Skills assessment of surgical training
  • Surgical simulation
