Clinical Decision Support for HIT

Case ID:
UA24-088
Invention:

This invention is clinical decision support (CDS) for the evaluation and diagnosis of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It involves the use of a HIT computerized-risk (HIT-CR) score to guide diagnostic support decisions to ultimately reduce unnecessary testing and misdiagnosis.

Background:
Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) occurs in 0.5% to 1% of patients exposed to unfractionated heparin for medical and surgical indications. Appropriate evaluation of HIT is imperative because of potentially life-threatening complications; however, over-testing and overdiagnosis of HIT are common. Traditional methods of diagnosis and treatment include platelet count versus time graphs and 4Ts score calculators which determine the need for immunoassay order for treatment. This new HIT-CR score method proposes a more accurate method of testing patients to determine the probability of HIT before taking further preventive measures.

Applications:

  • Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) diagnostic
  • Clinical decision support for HIT

Advantages:

  • Reduces unnecessary treatment of HIT
  • Improves clinical decision support (CDS)
  • Saves time and funds by eliminating unnecessary testing
