Invention:
This invention is a 13-item questionnaire that assesses the degree to which an individual's environment impacts on their sleep. It measures light/dark, noise/quiet, smell, humidity, sleeping surface, safety, and other factors.
Background:
In spite of the relatively short history of sleep and sleep disorder research, significant progress has been made in the field over the past few decades. Recent significant discoveries include the discovery of hypocretin/orexin and its role in sustaining wakefulness. This discovery has had profound impact on the diagnosis and treatment of sleep related disorders. New drugs with enhanced risks/benefits ratios makes it more important than ever to determine a patients diagnosis and current sleep practices/hygiene. A simple 13-item questionnaire like this is capable of quickly and efficiently determining a patient's sleep environment and allows practitioners to determine if there are issues that can be resolved before recommending or subscribing treatment. This questionnaire can also serve as a covariate during pharmaceutical clinical trials and an outcome measure for patients sleep environment.
Applications:
- Assessing a patients sleep environment
