A Small Molecule Kinase Inhibitor that Regulates RNA Degradation and Inhibits Tumor Growth and Invasion

Case ID:
UA22-045
Invention:

This invention describes a novel potential therapeutic for several cancers that inhibits tumor growth and invasion by regulating RNA degradation.

Background:
There have long been attempts to find new cellular mechanisms that can be targeted for a wide range of cancers without the notable and significant toxic effects of existing therapies like chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Recently, it has been validated by the inventors and other literature that regulating RNA decapping and degradation can play a significant role in controlling the growth and invasion of several types of cancer cells.

The inventors have proposed an allosteric Pim kinase inhibitor, VBT-34, that works by inhibiting the phosphorylation of proteins that regulate the process of RNA decapping and degradation. They show that VBT-34 inhibits the growth of leukemias, pancreatic, and prostate cancer cells.

Applications:

  • Novel inhibitor to slow the growth and spread of a range of cancers

Advantages:

  • May be applicable and effective for a wide range of cancers
  • Potential superior benefit than traditional toxic therapies like chemotherapies
