A Method for Exploiting Preamble Waveforms to Support New Physical-layer Functionalities in Wireless Systems

Case ID:
UA16-213
Invention:

This technology is an analog signal processing technique that allows a wireless device to embed user-specific information within the standardized preamble of each transmitted frame. Incorporating information from the physical structure of a wireless system can open up a whole host of possibilities, such as increasing security between two communicating devices.

Background:
Typically in wireless networks, a user's data is embedded in to the default preamble of wireless systems that are based on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). The preamble of the physical layer (PHY) is generally assumed to be a fixed pattern, and therefore never used to convey frame-specific bits. In addition, current OFDM systems do not incorporate the OFDM structure's information. The technology presented here is based on a combination of signal processing techniques that incorporate information from the PHY of the preamble for an OFDM system. The two signal processing techniques are time shift in time domain and phase rotation in frequency domain. Using these two techniques, the key characteristics of the preamble are preserved.

Applications:

  • Security encryption
  • Modulation obfuscation
  • Sender authentication
  • Random pilot subcarrier locations
  • Anti-jamming measures

Advantages:

  • Enhances security and encryption
  • Embeds information from the physical hardware of the device to the preamble
