3D Printing Contact Lens

Case ID:
UA18-092
Invention:

This invention utilizes a pulsed laser to locally cure optical materials used in fabricating freeform optics, specifically contact lenses.

Background:
Producing contact lenses is an expensive and time consuming process. However, the need and popularity for contact lenses is rising every year. This technology seeks to alleviate the costs of manufacturing contact lenses by offering a new mode of producing them via 3D printing.

Applications:

  • Production of contact lenses

Advantages:

  • Strong UV stability
  • Non-yellowing lens
  • High transmission of oxygen
  • Improves temperature and chemical resistance
  • Reduces time and cost of production
