Mechanism of Tissue Regeneration

Case ID:
UA23-032
Invention:

This invention is a biodegradable patch seeded with human neonatal dermal fibroblasts and human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes which helps regenerate endogenous cardiomyocytes in adult murine, rat, and swine models of myocardial infarction as a cause of chronic heart failure (CHF). This invention details changes in specific gene expression pathways with the recruitment of macrophages, as the mechanism of action of tissue regeneration. These pathways are not specific for cardiac muscle; thus, the researchers propose that these pathways could stimulate tissue regeneration for any tissue or organ in the body.

Background:
Regenerative medicine plays an important role in the development and application of new treatments to recover the damaged tissues and organs and restore their functions which were lost due to aging or disease. Current studies in the field focus on the regenerative mechanisms of neonatal mammals and non-mammals that have innate regenerative potential. This new study focuses on regenerative mechanisms on adult animals.

Applications:

  • Specific gene expression pathways
  • Regenerative medicine

Advantages:

  • Not specific to a single type of muscle
  • Responsive in adult animals
