AI-Based Synthetic Generation of Radio-Frequency Maps in Wireless Communication Systems

Case ID:
UA23-281
Invention:

This technology is a novel, cost-effective method which creates radiofrequency (RF) maps used in wireless communication. The improvement is that this technology can use previous RF maps as inputs and with the help of sophisticated artificial intelligence, produce new areas or new capabilities with the requirement of significant field measurements. This inventive method presents a valuable solution for efficiently generating RF maps and overcoming the complexities associated with site surveys, ray tracing, and other existing techniques. This technology can be used in any type of synthesizing heat maps, such as, weather heat maps, heat maps in biological imaging, etc., as well as for enhanced network planning, interference coordination, resource allocation, and localization.

Background:
Collecting RF data and conducting site surveys to construct RF maps is both time-consuming and labor-intensive due to the complex and dynamic nature of the wireless environment and the many of factors that can affect signal propagation, including building material, terrain, and interference. The technology is expected to achieve half the error rate of existing technologies.  The process of constructing RF maps becomes even more complex at high frequencies (e.g., millimeter-wave band), as many configurations must be investigated. Alternative state-of-the-art techniques for RF map generation rely on ray-tracing approaches. Besides their high computational complexity, ray-tracing approaches mainly require precise description of the objects in the RF environment along with their electromagnetic properties.
