Plasma from Mouse Stroke Model that can be used to detect Neurofilament Light Chain

Case ID:
UA23-071
Invention:

This invention relates to the intellectual property that consists of a stored archive of hundreds of mouse blood plasma samples that were taken from a laboratory stroke model for mice under various conditions of the mice age and the time past stroke. By evaluating the quantity of neurofilament light (NfL) chain (protein) within the samples they can serve as an indication of neurological damage. These indicators can then be used to develop correlations and calibrations to other measurements or assay methods of neurological damage post-stroke.

Background:
Neurofilament Light chain (NfL) is a neuronal protein released from cells which have sustained damage in neurological disorders, one of which is stroke. After studying stroke in a laboratory mouse model, the inventors have collected and archived hundreds of plasma samples from mouse blood under various conditions. Once these samples have been obtained, they may be used to determine whether an assay that quantify these NfL levels in human plasma may also be used to detect NfL in mouse plasma. When comparing the NfL levels in mice, there is the possibility of this assay detecting age-related neurodegeneration as well as validating the kit that can detect stroke-related neurodegeneration.

Applications:

  • Novel immunoassay for stroke detection
  • Novel immunoassay for neurodegenerative diseases

Advantages:

  • Diagnostic tool for strokes and other neurodegenerative diseases
  • Can be used as a predictive biomarker for strokes
