Case ID:
UA23-004
Invention:

StellarScape is a combination of music, dance, and cinematography, blended with state-of-the-art data visualization and astrophysical simulation. StellarScape is not only an immersive multimedia performance synthesizing music, science, visual art, and technology, but also an interactive audiovisual installation/experience that allows the visitors to touch the stars using their motion. StellarScape is the fusion of art, science, and technology, and shows that computers can be harnessed to create complex and evocative works of music, while using technology to display the grace of human movement and dance. Background:
StellarScape is advancing multimedia performances as convergence art/science research projects to forge new platforms for collaboration, education, and innovation. Anticipated research outcomes include (1) demonstration of astronomy ideas portrayed through media art, music, poetry, and dance, (2) development of software that converts supercomputer simulations into formats that can be used for video projection in a performance or exhibition space, and (3) pioneering methods for using wearable sensors and infrared cameras to enable the interaction of performers with generated art and astrophysical simulations. This novel cyberlearning curricula will foster the next generation of transdisciplinary innovators to think critically, collaboratively, and creatively, in order to succeed as they advance modern society among the stars.

StellarScape takes an inclusive approach to the development of artistic experience backed by scientific data, as well as making the frontiers of science accessible to lay audiences and communities. The resulting outcomes will contribute to public awareness and the practice of communicating scientific research. The artistic collaboration also seeks to inspire the scientific community through innovative representations of their work.

Applications:

  • User experience in performing arts (dance, concert)
  • Interactive installations and exhibitions
  • Fixed media video production

Advantages:

  • Fusion of multiple disciplines that can be monetized at all levels
  • Ground-breaking technology that can change an industry (performing arts, concerts, festivals)
