Target Axis Heliostat with Mechanically Coupled Reflector Deformation

Case ID:
UA22-185
Invention:

This technology utilizes a mechanical coupling system that changes the shape of the reflectors on the heliostat throughout the day. In doing so, the incoming light from the sun is always focused to a sharp image. This increases the temperature at the device’s receiver and allows for a higher efficiency in converting the incoming solar energy to electricity.

Background:
This technology builds on a previous design which included multiple components that have since been proven unnecessary. Previous barriers to earlier versions of this technology included electronic actuators and power systems required to run it. This new sleek design is simpler and less expensive than previous versions with potentially higher efficiency than existing solar cell models.

Applications:

  • Light concentration
  • Solar energy harvesting

Advantages:

  • Simple design
  • More efficient
  • Inexpensive
