Invention:
This invention describes an optical filter that can be used in the production of glasses that block wavelengths of light harmful to circadian rhythms and sleep.
Background:
The great importance of maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm and getting good sleep continues to be firmly supported by researchers, and more healthy sleep is known to produce better health outcomes compared to those who consistently get poor sleep. Currently, the market standard glasses do not protect the wearers from an increasing threat: bad sleep caused by wavelengths of light from 455-495nm (known as blue, or circadian-active light) emitted from screens. These wavelengths of light activate the circadian system to suppress melatonin, the hormone associated with sleep.
The inventors have developed an optical filter that blocks these circadian-active wavelengths of light and could be used on both prescription and non-prescription glasses. These glasses could prove to be an effective way to curb bad sleep and its resulting bad health outcomes for those who are around screens or light before bedtime.
Applications:
- Circadian-active light blocking prescription and non-prescription glasses
Advantages:
- Block 100% of the light from 455-495nm
- Promotes better protection from disrupted sleep due to lights or screens
