Rapid Diagnosis of Microbial Pathogens in Aquatic Species

Case ID:
UA21-073
Invention:

This technology is a rapid colorimetric assay to detect and diagnose diseases in various aquaculture species by utilizing a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification-based (RT-LAMP) assay. This product allows sensitive detection of <100 viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogen genomes per reaction without the need for a DNA/RNA purification step. This technology can be used in conjunction with conventional quantitative PCR and quantitative reverse transcription PCR without the need for DNA extraction from the sample.

Background:
Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food industries due to the nutritional value and many health benefits from consumption of aquatic species. Current technologies to detect diseases in aquaculture species require highly skilled workers to perform the time consuming processes of DNA/RNA purification. This causes traditional detection methods to be expensive to perform. This LAMP technology allows users to skip the usual DNA/RNA purification process, making the method much easier and more cost effective to use while still remaining highly sensitive for detection of viral and bacterial pathogens in aquatic species.

Applications:

  • Detection of various diseases in aquatic species
    • White Spot Syndrome Virus
    • Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus
    • Necrotising Hepatopancreatitis Vibrio parahaemolyticus
    • Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei
  • May be used in conjunction with q-PCR and qRT-PCR

Advantages:

  • Easy to use
  • Faster than traditional technology
  • Cost-effective
