The Use of Active Flow Control to Eliminate Vertical Stabilizers and Moving Control Surfaces

Case ID:
UA20-048
Invention:

This technology will use sweeping jet actuators to replace the moving control surface on an airplane tail vertical stabilizers.

Background:

With the aviation industry looking for methods to reduce the amount of material it takes to create an aircraft, there is a need to find alternative designs with less material. Reduced material in producing aircrafts is also favorable because it can result in decreased fuel utilization. Currently vertical stabilizers and rudders are primarily used conjunction with other moveable control surfaces to maneuver aircrafts. The present invention will replace the moving control surfaces on the tail’s vertical stabilizer via sweeping jet actuators, thereby reducing material use and fuel utilization. In addition, these sweeping jet actuators allow for enhanced control of other critical components of the aircraft.
