eADR Software: Electronic Automation of the Calculation of Adenoma Detection Rate

Case ID:
UA20-028
Invention:

This technology is a set of algorithms that are able to automate the calculation of the Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR), a widely accepted global performance benchmark on quality for screening colonoscopy. The ADR is a reportable rate of a doctor’s ability to find adenomas, attempt of endoscopic removal of polyps, and more.

Background:
Colon cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer deaths globally and the second highest in the United States. Regular screening tests, such as a colonoscopy, can detect forms of cancer early. Early detection allows for more treatment options and a lower chance of mortality. It is vital for these screening tests to be accurate and identify any signs of cancer, making it imperative to have accuracy and levels of quality control.

Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR) is a calculated rate at which a physician finds one or more pre-cancerous polyps during a screening colonoscopy procedure. This quality benchmark has several stakeholders, so it is important to have an accurate ADR calculation. Manual calculation is not the most precise way due to human error and poor documentation. The adoption of an automated electronic calculation will reduce the chance of errors and ensure patients are aware of their physician’s success with their procedures.

Applications:

  • Automated calculation of Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR)

Advantages:

  • Reduced chance of error
  • ADR rates updated rapidly
