Genetic Markers For Resistance Against Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) In Shrimp

This invention describes a genetic line resistant to Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). A gene expression analyses was conducted to measure the relative expression of genes in two populations of shrimp (susceptible and resistant lines). Differentially expressed genes have been identified as markers for resistance and/or susceptibility to AHPND in shrimp.

Background:
Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) refers to a lethal disease found in marine shrimp that has caused increasingly greater amounts of mortalities in shrimp aquaculture throughout Asia and the Americas. It is also known as Early Mortality Syndrome (EMS) in shrimp. It is a threat to the sustainability of global shrimp farming. Development of AHPND resistant or tolerant shrimp is one of the prophylactic approaches scientists are utilizing to combat the disease.

  • Use by global shrimp farmers
  • Used by students and universities to help identify markers for other animal diseases
    • Especially diseases affecting shrimp populations
