Ultrasound-guided Percutaneous Nephrostomy Model

This invention is a surgical training model for ultrasound-guided ablation of kidney stones. This model includes the following features for optimal surgical training: kidney structure, kidney stones, ribs, paraspinous muscle, and fluid drip.

 

Background:
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a medical procedure to treat large kidney stone accumulation (stones larger than 2 cm), involving obtaining percutaneous access to the patient’s kidney. PCNL is a challenging procedure in part because of the complexity of obtaining safe access to the kidney. This procedure traditionally involved fluoroscopy, however that method exposed the patient and the medical team to harmful ionizing radiation. In addition, flouroscopic imaging has the potential to injure the skin or the renal capsule. PCNL can now be performed with ultrasound imaging alone. However, since this is still a new technique, there is a need for a training simulation model for ultrasound-guided percutaneous nephrostomy.
