Educational Science Kits for use in Traditional, Underserved, Small, or Remote Classrooms

Case ID:
UA18-256
Invention:

This invention is a series of science experiment modules for use as educational tools in underserved, small or remote classrooms. Each experiment illustrates scientific concepts through the use of inexpensive materials that are readily available in grocery or hardware stores.

Background: Currently too few students have access to quality educational resources that would allow them to succeed in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) - especially in lower-income and remote schools. Since 2010, funding to Title 1 low-income schools has decreased. In addition, traditional lecture-based teaching methods are not effective for learning complex educational concepts. The technology presented here increases student engagement, which has been shown to result in better retention of the learning material.

Applications:

  • STEM education
  • Educational tool in remote and/or underserved classrooms

Advantages:

  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to implement
  • Portable and adaptable
  • Accessible
  • Promotes active learning
  • Incorporates use of household/easily accessible items
