A Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial that Synergizes with Copper

Case ID:
UA18-189
Invention:

University of Arizona researchers have developed an invention that synergizes with copper to kill and prevent further growth of a broad spectrum of pathogens (i.e both Streptococcus pneumoniae and Valley Fever with the potential to work on other pathogens). This therapy does not allow for resistance to be built by the microbes.

Published paper with mouse model data available at https://journals.asm.org/doi/full/10.1128/Spectrum.00778-21.

Background:
Streptococcus pneumoniae is bacteria that causes meningitis, sepsis, ear infections, and pneumonia. Due to increased antibiotic resistance and the number of strains not protected by the pneumococcal vaccine, treatment of this bacteria is becoming increasingly difficult. Valley Fever is a debilitating fungal respiratory disease without a vaccine that lacks treatment options.

Applications:

  • Broad acting
  • Inhaler therapy
  • Kills Valley Fever and Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria

Advantages:

  • Works quickly
  • Highly effective
  • Does not allow for the development of resistance
