Recrystallization of Ceramics

Invention:

This technology is a recrystallization method of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) to change the ceramic material properties. The brittle nature of the ceramic material is transformed to be metal-like after the recrystallization process, which results in "strain-free" equiaxed grains.

 

Background:
Although ceramic materials are brittle with high melting points in their natural state, once they have crystallized they are light, strong and heat resistant. They reduce the need for cooling as opposed to metal materials which require copious cooling measures. Ceramic materials also can increase fuel efficiency resulting in lower fuel costs.

  • Turbine engines
  • Exhaust nozzles
  • Nose caps
  • Braking systems for luxury cars
  • Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) fabrication


Advantages:

  • Can be used to tailor specific properties of ceramics
