Howl-itosis: Engineered Bacteria for Dog and Cat Oral Microbiota to Improve Health and Breath

Case ID:
UA17-247
Invention:

This invention involves an innovative and easy treatment method to control breath odor in pets by supplementing chew toys and treats with engineered oral bacteria that produce pleasant smelling factors (e.g. wintergreen mint, etc.).

Background:
Pet’s bad breath is a common problem and it is attributed to bacterial biofilm that forms along the gums, tongue, and teeth. Current treatments for bad breath includes “fresheners” that merely mask the smell temporarily, and dental devices that must be administered by the owner (which can be time consuming to owners and stressful to pets). To counteract bad breath in pets, the invention uses naturally-derived oral bacteria specifically engineered to produce pleasant smelling aromatic compounds that can be easily administered by simply supplementing treats or chew toys with the formula.
