Enhancing the Quality of Science and Creating a Competitive Edge: A Research Presentation for Search Committees

Case ID:
UA09-070
Invention:

The work consists of an online presentation that provides evidence about how unconscious bias may influence evaluation of candidates. Designed to be presented to faculty search committees, it provides an opportunity for members to discuss how to overcome potential biases in their own processes. Online presentation tittles include the following: "Practical Tips: Deepening the Pool"  "Practical Tips: Reducing/Eliminating Bias" "Interview Toolkit"  "Annotated Bibliography." Content customization is possible pending further discussions with the OTT and the PI.

Background:

Women and minorities are underrepresented among faculty relative to their representation among graduates in many fields. Studies suggest that unconscious bias at each stage of the hiring process may influence the selection of women and minorities. This online presentation has the intention to reduce and/or eliminate unconscious bias.

Advantages:

  • Deliverable via the web
  • Developed through extensive research at The University of Arizona in connection with the ADVANCE project.

Applications:

  • Any academic organization seeking to improve its hiring processes by reducing and/or eliminating unconscious bias
