Color Corrector for MODE Optical System

Case ID:
UA21-122
Invention:

This technology is a system of lenses for use in space telescopes. The optical system combines state-of-the-art optical lens technology with new corrective lenses that address shortcomings in the state-of-the-art optical systems.

Background:
Telescopes in space that orbit earth are typically used for scientific research and surveillance purposes. The aperture size is a limiting factor in the effectiveness of a space telescope, especially when examining deep space for exoplanets or other celestial objects and phenomena. However, the larger and more massive the telescope is, the more expensive and difficult it becomes to successfully launch and deploy it. Recent developments in lens technologies have helped address the weight issue, enabling a new generation of much more powerful space telescopes.

This technology builds on the advantages of state-of-the-art refractive and multi-order diffractive lens elements, and introduces novel corrective elements to produce an optical system with superior image quality while maintaining ultralightweight construction.

Applications:

  • Space telescopes

Advantages:

  • Lightweight
  • Improved image quality
  • Suitable to broad range of wavelengths
