This technology is a method of modeling the response of a luggage inspection device based on a variety of contents and packing styles. The method is used to calibrate inspection instruments' responses, and predict successful inspection. This allows for better inspection machine design, decreases the number of bags pulled for secondary screening, and increases the effectiveness of identifying threats.

 

Background:
Every year, millions of bags are screened at airports, ports of entry, and even when entering high-security buildings. Bags are often flagged as containing a suspicious item but after a manual check of the bag, the bag actually doesn't contain any harmful items.  This increases the inspection time and is vulnerable to mistakes.

 

Applications:

  • Inspection machine calibration and simulations
  • Testing of new inspection scanning techniques
